Power of an Innocent Thought

It was a decent restaurant in the outskirts of the city. I use to go there often to spend some time alone and look out for strange characters who would pass the city through that highway. One day just after a heavy rainfall, when I was waiting for my tea to arrive.

Only then owner of restaurant Mrs Shukla, herself came and put two glasses of tea on the table, sat in front of me and asked, "What's wrong with you?"

I was taken aback by her strange question. Then a thought came, how can she know that I not in best of my mood today. Actually, I had just failed in entrance exam  of a film school and that was my last chance. I almost wanted to end this idea of becoming a story teller.

“See your face is saying all about it.” she said breaking my thoughts.

“Let me tell you a story of me, rainbow and this restaurant, which made me realized that there is a great power in thoughts.”, she said soothingly.

On a late Sunday noon, a family of four came into my restaurant and sat down - Dad, Mom, two children – one girl approximately 7 and a boy around 5.  It was a slow day due overcast. The little boy was quite talkative and I found out just about everything they did the week before. They were the only ones present at  the restaurant. While they ate lunch and relaxed, rains started.

I tell you, I just love rainbows. I sometimes feel like I am a rainbow chaser.  I don't know how but I get impulses when it is raining and rainbow is about to appear. That being said, after the rains stopped I felt that impulse. So, went out to check and saw the most beautiful rainbow.

I moved back to restaurant to check that family. Parents were almost done and were discussing their extended families while children were doing things among themselves. I asked them if they needed anything else, to which they said they would let me know later.

I was about to move back, when I asked the parents if I could take their kids to see the rainbow.  I could see the glance between them, probably wondering if I was a kidnapper, but that quickly passed as I described the sheer beauty of what was happening right outside the door.  Told them we would be right out front and they could come too.  They let the children go with me while they get back to their discussion and food.

The little boy grabbed my hand and we walked out and sat down on the doorway.  By now there were two rainbows and working on a third. I explained a little science and the children were just amazed. They had never seen a real rainbow, only ones in movies and books.

The parents came out and we all sat there and watched for a few minutes at the wonder of the rainbow.  Another car drove into the parking lot and I knew this had to end because I was about to get another customer. They paid and we said our goodbyes.

A half a year later, it was a usual weekday morning with moderate rush in the restaurant. A family had just entered and I waited them to settle. When I approached the table, the little boy in the family jumps up and says to me, “Can you make it happen again?”

I of course had no idea what he was referring to. The mom and dad explained they had been here a year before and their little boy told everyone how he met someone who could make rainbows. His sister kept telling her brother that it didn’t work that way and there would not be any rainbow and he should just shut up.

The young man was very convinced that I could indeed make it happen. I didn’t know what to do, but I tried to explain as nicely as I could, that I didn’t think we would be able to see a rainbow that day.  It was a beautiful sunny day and it never rains in this season.

As I left the table, I could hear the little boy saying to his sister, “You just wait and see.”

Well, I don't know how but soon the sky darkened and it poured for about 5 minutes. Then all cleared up and what remained was a beautiful rainbow.

Now you may call this a coincidence, miracle, sign from above or just damn amazing.  All I know is there was one little boy who proved his sister wrong, amazed his parents and sat with me for a very long time on a bench outside calling me the rainbow maker.

You know, it was the power of his innocent thought that could do something like this. He had faith on himself first of all that something like this could have happened.

So, don’t ever think negative, there are lot of good things that are eager to happen to you but we being negative just don’t give them the needed power to grow.

After this I had a cup of coffee and stayed with the story that Mrs Shukla just told me. Later I chose to do Mass Communication course with a hope to fulfill my dream in some or the other way.

And now I just write and cook apart from trying to see a double rainbow.
